Where did Eyebrow Shaping Come From?

The main function of eyebrows is to prevent the sweat, water, and other debris from falling into the eyes. It is also the main device for facial expression. The eyebrow shape changes according to the expression of the face showing expressions such as anger, surprise, happiness, curiosity, etc. Nevertheless, lot of importance has been paid to maintain these twins since age immemorial. It is hard to say, when humans started tending and shaping their brows, but there are a few records which show this practice even in the ancient times.

In Egypt in order to pay homage to the God Horus, Egyptian men and women wore makeup on their eyes and eyebrows. It was also believed that it would help ward off disease and evil spirits. Eyes were kohl lined and eyebrows were either shaved off or tweezed and were applied with a lead-based black powder called galena.

The Romans used tweezers, razors made from flint, creams, and stones to remove hair. Having body hair was considered uncivilized in the Roman times. Roman women favored unibrows and used false brows made out of dyed goat’s hair which were attached to the skin with tree resin.

In the Ancient Greek women paid much more attention to eyebrows. They used powdered minerals or soot to paint the eyebrows black. THe Unibrow was famous among Greek women,too. They also used false lashes to enhance their looks.

The Unibrow was also famous in the ancient times. A mosaic image from 548 A.D. Shows empress Theodora with shaped unibrow eyebrows.

In Japan, during the Heian period, the court ladies shaved their eyebrows off and would redraw eyebrows high on the forehead.

In Europe during the medieval times, thin eyebrows were very famous. They would pluck it to achieve that thin-eyebrow look. Queen Elizabeth I made this look famous.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, thick eyebrows were a rage and women again started using false eyebrows which were made from the furry mouse skin. They would stick it up high on the forehead.

During the 20th century, several cosmetic companies introduced eyebrow fillers.

Eyebrow shaping is an integral part of makeup industry and it has traveled a long way.
